The bathroom is another area where unseen issues can cause complications. Below are some tips to manage this area efficiently.
Check your toilet for leaks:__
A constantly running toilet can waste water and even cause damage to the floor and ceiling below. Tip: Put a piece of dry toilet paper against the inner side wall of the bowl above the water line. Instead of toilet paper, you can also add a few drops of food colouring to the cistern. If the colour appears in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.
If there is a leak from the cistern (water tank), it will quickly show the problem. Regularly check for leaks around the base and listen for the sound of running water even when not in use.
Replacing a worn-out flapper valve is a simple and inexpensive DIY fix. That is in the tank / cistern behind the toilet bowl. For easy-to-understand videos, go to the internet and search for “flapper valve”. You will be surprised to see how easy it is.
Report sewerage problems:
If your toilet does not drain fast and clean, or makes abnormal noises, please report it to the caretaker as this can indicate a blockage, which can get worse, and result in a total blockage in the drainpipes.
Clean your shower drain:
Hair and soap buildup can clog drains, leading to overflows and potential water damage to your unit and those below. Use a drain strainer to catch debris and periodically clean the drain with a drain snake or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
Tip: pour boiling water down the drain periodically (but caution against doing this too frequently as it can damage PVC pipes)
Clean your shower head/rose:
Sand and other small particles come into the small strainer/filter of the rose and can block it solid. Open it and wash it under a tap with running water to wash it backwards. Be careful not to wash away small parts.
Tip: Put a bucket under to catch the spares, like washers, strainer (exceedingly small!) and o-rings. Visit your hardware store for advice. There is an array of filters for showers on the market, even with replaceable filters.
By performing these simple maintenance tasks, you can help protect your unit and the entire building from costly repairs and ensure a comfortable living environment for all residents.
